Better We, Better Week, July 22, 2024: Creating Safety in Our Communication with Others

by Lori Beth Rodrigues

Great Morning Team,

Last week, after a great brainstorming session with our People Team about future communication training, I had some time to reflect on what some of the most important elements are of it all. Where I landed was back to what remains foundational regardless of what model of communication training we utilize at any given time, and that is the need for Psychological Safety. In essence, the ability to create safe spaces in conversations with and for each other allows us to have discussions with respectful candor, share ideas, admit our mistakes, and invites everyone to voice their perspectives without fear of repercussions. We have had a lot of discussions about how to utilize our No Fault Formula communication model in our everyday work.  One of the most successful strategies of the model is the embedded neutral language in the questions posed to use with others. That neutral language is what helps to create the safe space we need when engaging in any conversation, especially when we need to provide feedback to someone or for a conflict we might be working through.

I found a terrific article from the Center For Compassionate Leadership, titled, “Language Matters: Use These Six Phrases To Create An Environment of Psychological Safety.” ( Click here.) In past posts, I have discussed some phases, taken from Amy Edmondson, that you can use to create safety with others, such as:

I don’t know.

I need help.

I made a mistake.

I’m sorry.

This short article I discovered is worth a quick read, as it provides some additional options of conversational language to utilize in your everyday work, leading compassionately. Even something so simple as to say “Yes” before saying “No” and the reasoning behind it.

Enjoy experimenting with these new strategies to create safety for others and please, let us know what you discover, and how the No Fault Formula communication model is currently working for you in the comments below! 😊

Wishing you all a Better We, Better Week! 😊
