Better We, Better Week – July 7, 2025: Becoming 1% Better Everyday…Or Perhaps 22% Better!

by Lori Beth Rodrigues

Great Morning Team!

Welcome Back! Or, if this is your first time visiting, Welcome to In The Groove!

After a behind-the-scenes team effort to work out the issues of some malware and bots that had infiltrated our site, all now is finally well and we can get back to the business of connecting, sharing, learning and growth for all, through this amazing Groove structure we have built! Once again, a HUGE thanks to Sean, our IT team, and our Marketing team for all their hard work and efforts to bring our company-wide Blog, In The Groove back online, refreshed, with some great enhancements!

For this week’s Better We, Better Week, I wanted to bring up the concept of becoming “1% better at something every day,” a concept worth (in my humble opinion,) discussing regularly. As we continue the evolution of our growth culture, every day and even multiple times a day, you will eventually be given the gifts of routine feedback by your colleagues, mentors and managers to help you become 1% better. It’s how we will help each other grow to become the best versions of ourselves, realizing our limitless potential, hence “Development as a Team Sport.” I recently discovered that this “1% better” concept is not just isolated to E&I. I learned through a recent conversation that the University of Utah has adopted this concept in quite a meaningful and heartfelt way.

On December 26, 2020, Football player Ty Jordan tragically lost his life and shortly thereafter, just nine months later, his teammate Aaron Lowe, passed away on September 26, 2021. To honor both players, the number 22 jersey was the first retired in the history of the Utah football program to memorialize them both. The number 22 now serves to honor both players and their legacy by the university encouraging to “live the way that Jordan and Lowe did- to smile- and to be 22-percent better every day.” Both teammates were described as hardworking, with incredible work ethics and extremely positive, among other attributes. I imagine that both of these talented individuals embraced a growth mindset to have achieved their incredible successes, leaving such wonderful legacies, which was “To work hard. To be a good teammate, and to improve as people on and off the field – to be 22-percent better.”  (Click here to read the full article.)

Reflecting on Habit 2 of Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, “Begin with the End in Mind,” what is the legacy you want to create? What does it mean for you to become “1% better” every day?” Post your thoughts below and let’s discuss!

Wishing you all a Better We, Better Week! 😊
